36x48 White Highland Calves original oil by Denise Rich

About 6 years ago I had a request for a custom of a Highland cow portrait, so I set about looking for some.  It is not often that I see any in my part of the world as it is too hot much of the time for all of that hair I suppose.  I looked for Highland Cattle Breeders, and the closest ones I was able to contact lived in Santa Ynez.  At the time (pre Covid) I was still doing the Cattlemen's Western Art Show which has been cancelled the last two years and I have not heard any news of it returning unfortunately.  Anyway, I had plans to attend that year in Paso Robles, and made plans to stop on my way home via Santa Ynez so I could get some reference.  And I did just that, thanks to Tracy who met with me there and took me to where the small herd was located.  She stood with me the entire time as I took many photos of all, knowing this shot was one I would eventually paint.

It only took 6 years, but I really like it a lot, and I hope you do also!
